How to open fireplace damper
I've moved into my new condo and I am trying to light the fireplace for the
first time. Maintenance is off duty until tomorrow so Ca not get any help
until tomorrow... I am trying to open the damper but it wo not open. The
damper opener has a think metal hook in the top inner middle of the
fireplace and it only goes forward 1 inch and back 1 inch as the design
allows it. Should it go up and down? Or somethin ...
Not necessarily. In ur condo you probably have what is called
a zero clearance fireplace. I am guessing that it is metal lined & the
damper a round disc shape located at the very base of the metal chimney.
The one inch of motion MIGHT be enough to pivet the damper open. You
should be able to look inside, with a flashlight, to see if the damper is
open. If so, there should be an updraft. You could light a SMALL piece
of newspaper & see if the flame & smoke is drawn upward, then see if moving the lever causes a different reaction. If I am right, please ''pick me'' as best answer & let me know. Hope you have a cozy fire soon, & someone to enjoy it with! JM in Michigan
I am the fire place queen and it is called a flute and it is
suppose to be up just take your poker and push it up and it may not look
like it is going far enough but it is it may even look like is has fell
back down but once you push it up you should be good and the smoke will
then go up the chimney
Get a flashlight and look up there,when you move the lever it
will open.As long as its open you should be fine.
