How to open fireplace damper

I've moved into my new condo and I am trying to light the fireplace for the

first time. Maintenance is off duty until tomorrow so Ca not get any help

should be able to look inside, with a flashlight, to see if the damper is

open. If so, there should be an updraft. You could light a SMALL piece  
of newspaper & see if the flame & smoke is drawn upward, then see if  
moving the lever causes a different reaction. If I am right, please

I am the fire place queen and it is called a flute and it is

suppose to be up just take your poker and push it up and it may not look

Get a flashlight and look up there,when you move the lever it

will open.As long as its open you should be fine.
